A65a 1947 FIRST NEW DIRECTIONS EDITION
Cranberry red cloth boards. Gray, black and white jacket illustrated with an abstract design of shapes. Miller's photograph between pages [ii] and [iii]
Published in November 1947, at $3.75, in an edition of 4,973 copies.
A65b 1947 VARIANT FIRST EDITION
Cranberry red cloth boards. Gray, black and white jacket illustrated with an abstract design of shapes.
Note: New Directions was not able to provide information on the variat described above. Miller's photograph was probably intended as a frontispiece, and as seen in A65a, was placed accordingly. However, given that the title page actually covered two pages [ii-iii], Miller's photograph looked out of place by "splitting" the two title pages, resulting in it being placed further back in the text.
A65c 1952 FIRST GREY WALLS EDITION
Red cloth boards. Lime green and red illustrated dust jacket with an illustration of a red .
Published in 1952, at 21 shillings.
Note This edition does not contain "Murder the Murderer," "Astrological Fricassee," "Obscenity and the Law of Reflection," or "The Most Lovely Inanimate Object in Existence" found in the American editions. Also absent are the illustrations.
A65d 1952 SECOND GREY WALLS (FALCON) EDITION
Yellow paper boards. Yellow dust jacket.
Published in 1952, at 15 shillings.
Note: Sheets for this book are from the Grey Walls Press edition [A65c]. Changes are found only in the binding and dust jacket. GREY WALL PRESS is listed on the title page of this book, while the Falcon Press publisher's device is found on the book's spine.
According to bookseller Alan Smith of Cheshire, England, Grey Wall Press began publication in 1940. In 1946, Grey Walls Press shared facilities with the Falcon Press, eventually becoming a part of the Falcon Press operation. Both publishers ceased operations in 1954. This edition suggests a final effort at depleting existing stock before ending business and could have been published anytime between 1952 and 1954.
A65e THIRD GREY WALLS EDITION
Yellow paper boards. Lime green and red illustrated dust jacket with illustration of red ribbon.
Published in 1952.
Note: This variant consists of the First British Edition [A65c] clipped dust jacket, and a Second British Edition [A65d] book. In the O'Roark catalogue it was questioned whether this variant was a "marriage" of two editions or a genuine variant. Three examples of this variant were seen and in each case the dust jacket had the price clipped. Considering the history of the Gray Walls Press [A65d], and the frequency which which this variant had been seen, it most likely was issued by the publisher in this manner.
A65h 1952 SECOND VARIANT OF THIRD GREY WALLS EDITION
Blue cloth boards. Yellow dust jacket
Published in 1952, at 15 shillings.
Note: This edition differs from the two previous Falcon Editions [A65d & A65e] by having blue cloth instead of yellow paper boards. The dust jacket is the same as the variant edition [A65e]. As noted in the Bibliography, this edition was produced between 1952 and 1954, but states 1952 on p. [4].
