THE PERENNIAL QUESTION when building
bookshelves is whether to have fixed shelves or
adjustable shelves.
 
Fixed shelves look neater, are stronger, and have
no gaps and no hardware.
 
Adjustable shelves, on the other hand, can
be....adjusted.
ONE WAY to avoid
some of the funkiness of
adjustable-shelf hard-
ware is this system of
holes with metal sleeves.
 
Each of the holes in the
shelves above has a
brass sleeve inserted...it
looks very finished.

They look very fragile, and would be, but there’s a
trick. These shelves actually have a back, which is
painted the same color as the wall.
