Chicago (5.04_05)

I went to the Summerfest show with my sister, Monica, and, again, my friend Ali. We didn't get to see The Frays, the opening band, which I was kind of bummed about, because we were a tad bit late. We got there and had to walk to the very end of the Summerfest grounds (which took way too long because apparently people forgot how to walk) because, well, that's where the Marcus Ampitheater is located. I got a shirt, the one that I wanted (the "Weezer: rocking the bitches since 1994", Ali got the "I've got a Weezer in my pocket...and I'm happy to see you" shirt, and Monica got the Pixies Greatest Hits CD). We got into the Ampitheater, found our seats, and shortly afterword The Pixies came on. They were, of course, amazing, but I'm not a huge Pixies fan. However, there were a bunch of Weezer fans that were sitting down (some were even holding up the "Weezer Hand Sign" thing, which I thought was incredibly rude. The Pixies played for a long time (like, an hour and a half). Then Weezer came onstage (Oh, and Rivers is, like, growing out his hair, just in case you were wondering). They first played "Say It Ain't So", then "Undone" (I'm not sure on the whole setlist, however). But they did play "Perfect Situation" (the second ever live performance of that song) and "El Scorcho", my personal favorite (the second live performance since 2002) and after they played "El Scorcho" Rivers said, "Good times, good times." I thought it was funny, but you couldn't really hear anything because there were so many people losing their minds, which was completely understood. At one point they played "Fall Together". Scott sang that. At first you couldn't really hear him, but after a while you could, and he is a pretty good singer, but I really don't like Maladroit all that much. That's probably the one song that I like off that record. Then they played another Maladroit song, and I think Rivers was only singing bits and pieces of it. They really only played the singles though. There was this fat woman in front of us (with, like, 10 teenagers who kept taking pictures; they were clearly teenyboppers, by the way) who had a fanny pack on (I know, I know) and she was dancing. And Ali turns to me and goes "I ain't never seen an ass like that." Some of the people behind us (who were really only there to see The Pixies, as far as I could tell) sat down until "Island in the Sun" came on, and then they left. I was like "What?" After a few more songs, they went off stage and came back after about 10 minutes and played two songs ("Haunt You Every Day" and "Hash Pipe"). I was sitting there waiting for the giant flying "W" to come down...but it never did (the background was the Make Believe background, but it was, like, colored, it was pretty cool though). I was very disappointed about that! But it was still a good concert.

So I get home, like, 2 hours later and went to the website because I wanted to send Karl a review of it. But there was a new news thing up, and I always read those (it was the 7/6 one, by the way). So I read it and at the very end was "...shoutout to Emily Day!" (and that's me). I was freaking out so much. I had sent Karl an e-mail about how my birthday was 5 days before the concert, and I didn't actually think he'd do a shoutout but he did (and now he's my 2nd favorite Weezer member, first being Brian, third being Rivers and Pat, fourth being Matt, fifth being Mikey, and sixth being Scott)! I was so, so, so happy. Then the next day, Alyssa, a friend of mine, IMs me and she was freaking out too (I am still effing excited). Turns out, the picture of her (awesome, might I add) handmade "Weezer-Make Believe" shirt was on the Weezer J.O.N.A.S. e-mail! And, to top it all off, the Weezer Celebrity Playlist was on iTunes! So it was a pretty Weezer-ific week!
