TODD NEWMAN, "Kewi 1440" (Bert)
The liner notes list Newman as contributing "etc." to
this album, but the reality is that the disc is Newman through and through. Having kicked around
in various groups (Leatherwoods, Hayley Mills Bros.) and solo for a number of years, he
has filled this CD with sardonic pop-rock ditties. "Elizabeth Montgomery's Face" has the
singer/songwriter sounding like the stepbrother of Robyn Hitchcock, while "Turf Club, St.
Paul" and "Our College Station Then" are vivid snapshots of things he holds near and dear.
"Kewi 1440" is like a drive down your hometown's main street -- bittersweet, remorseful, happy
and sad all in one trip. 5449
