Well here we go. Wanted a project toy and boy did we get one. This is an origninal 1967 SS396 Chevelle vin code 138.
It was purchased from a gentleman who started it and had 3 cars to make 1 good one from, but he came across a better project car and sold this one to us.
The car came loaded with extra parts in the trunk including new wire looms, bolt kits, some weatherstripping and loads of exta parts. The initial concept was to clean it up and make it drivable immediately. Unfortunately the more we got into things and saw how half-assed some things were the project got torn down further and further. The motor ran, but had some blow-by and at the stage we had it torn down, Kay suggested we pull the engine. Good thing upon further teardown, our blow-by was coming from a loose wrist pin slotting the side of the cylinder. Sooo, the more we dig into it the more we need to do. As of Nov 20, 2001, this is where we stand:
-Stripped the front frame and firewall to bare metal.
-Painted front end with with POR-15 semi-flat black
-Undercoated entire chassis
-New PST front and rear suspension components
-New KYB shocks front and rear
-Added new sway bars Front: 1-1/4" Rear: 1-1/8"
-New PST body bushings
-Re-built 12 bolt rear-end. Now a 3.73 with Eaton Posi unit
-All new brake hard lines and rubber lines
-All new brakes Front:Disc Rear:Drum
-New gas tank and sending unit
-Holley "Blue" 14 psi electric fuel pump and regulator
-Rebuilt 396 engine:(now a 402)
-:-.30 over 9.5-1 pistons
-:-Forged steel 427 crank with L-88 rods
-:-Comp Cams XE268 cam: 515/520 lift@ 224/230 deg dur @.050
-:-Oval port heads 219 int/118 exh -ported
-:-Comp Cams roller tip rockers with 3/8" pushrods
-:-Edelbrock Performer RPM Air Gap manifold
-:-Holley "old style" 3310 780 cfm vac secondary carb
-:-Doug's headers 1-3/4" tube
-:-M&H Fabricators electronic ignition conversion kit
-Rebuilt turbo 400 transmission: racebestos clutches, Trans- go shift kit, L-88 converter(approx 2200 rpm)
Still to go:
-Finish installing and setting up motor
-Clean and repaint core support
-Buy new radiator
-Install new engine and front end wire looms
-Re-hang front end sheetmetal with new bolt
-Finish body work and minimal rust damage and rear window
-Paint: planned color is 1967 facory Robollo Red
-Paint: interior exposed metal
-Redo complete interior in stock SS black: car has buckets with center console
-Exterior brightwork: refinish or purchse as needed
-Go for a ride!!!
